RIP Hightower

There is sadness in the A Bad Education Shed today, as we learn the upsetting news that Bubba Smith has died.

Bubba Smith, 28th Feb 1945 - 3rd Aug 2011

Bubba, real name Charles Aaron Smith, started out as a professional American Football player. He played in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers. In 1970, he was a part of the Superbowl V winning Colts team and became famous nationwide. When he retired from Football in the late 70’s, he began a career in acting, starting out as guest roles in popular TV shows such as Wonder Woman, Charlie’s Angels, Taxi and Hart to Hart to name but a few.

It was in 1984 when Bubba became known worldwide though, as he co-starred in one of the biggest comedy movies of all time, Police Academy. In this film, he played Moses Hightower, the gentle giant of the group with amazing strength. The man who would rip out the driver’s seat of a car, and sit in the back seat to comfortably drive. The shy florist who would only use his strength when needed, and when that time came, the bad guys knew they were in trouble. He would reprise this role in all but the last of the Police Academy movies, and even made an appearance as Hightower in the live action Police Academy TV series.

After Police Academy, he continued to guest star in a variety of TV shows including MacGuyver and Sabrina The Teenage Witch. None of these roles would propel Bubba to the same height as the role in Police Academy. It is Hightower he was most fondly remembered for, and it will be Hightower he is most fondly remembered as.

Rest in peace, big man!
